What an FDE does day to day

The title says "forward deployed" because the engineer works where the customer is, not behind the product team. In practice the week looks like this:

  • The day runs on the customer's schedule. Customers report problems asynchronously, so strong FDEs triage whatever arrived overnight and then settle the day's priorities at the customer's standup, not only their own company's. How an FDE's day runs.
  • Finding the real problem. The request a client brings is a hypothesis: "automate PR review" can turn out to mean two overloaded reviewers. Discovery comes before code. How FDEs clarify requirements.
  • Wiring into messy systems. Enterprise AI pilots often stall because data sits in many separate systems. Inventorying, mapping and reconciling the customer's data is the core of the job, not a chore before it. Customer data onboarding.
  • Owning production. There is no handoff to an implementation team: if the customer's pipeline breaks at 2am, the FDE is the one who fixes it. FDE vs software engineer.
  • Being on site. The usual range is 25–50% of time at the customer: about 25% at Palantir, up to 50% at OpenAI and Istari Digital. Why most FDE roles cannot be done from home.
  • Feeding the product. A patch written at one customer can die with the project or become a feature for everyone; which one happens depends on how the FDE records it and hands it back. From one customer's patch to a shared feature.

FDE vs software engineer, solutions architect and consultant

The four roles overlap, and many job posts blur them. The cleanest test is who writes the final code and who answers when production breaks.

Skills and the 8-stage roadmap

If you cannot code, you will not get in: Python and full-stack work are the most common requirements in FDE job posts. Technical skill is only the floor, though. Communication, stakeholder management and comfort with ambiguity decide how candidates are ranked (what FDE recruiters look for). The FDE Times roadmap breaks the craft into eight stages:

  1. 01FoundationsUnderstand the role and how an FDE creates value.
  2. 02Broad engineeringHandle everything from data and APIs to infrastructure yourself.
  3. 03Applied AIUse LLMs and agents to solve real problems.
  4. 04CustomersFind the real problem and communicate clearly.
  5. 05DeploymentPut the solution into production with real data.
  6. 06MeasurementProve value with the numbers customers care about.
  7. 07LeadershipRun the project and feed lessons back to the product team.
  8. 08CareerBuild a portfolio and get through FDE interviews.

How much FDEs earn

$216kmedian base pay, US posts
$168k–$216kmiddle half of roles
179job posts with a published range

Across 179 US FDE job posts from 20 companies that state a pay range, the median base salary (midpoint of the range) is $216k, and the middle half of roles sits between $168k and $216k. These are base salaries as employers publish them, without equity or bonus; outside the US, posts rarely state pay.

Headline figures such as $550,000 are something else: in our breakdown of FDE pay, that number is the top of Aced's estimate of annual total compensation at OpenAI and Anthropic, mostly equity, not a salary. Three job postings, one ladder follows pay from one year of experience to eight.

Frequently asked questions

Is Forward Deployed Engineer a good career?

Demand is strong right now: FDE Times counts 432 open FDE roles at 42 companies, 88 of them posted in the last 30 days. In US posts that state pay, the median base salary is $216k (salary data). The costs are travel, often 25–50% of time at customers, and owning a customer's production system when it breaks. Later moves include principal FDE, product manager, engineering manager and founder (career paths after FDE).

Do Forward Deployed Engineers code?

Yes. Coding is the entry bar, with Python and full-stack work the most common requirements (what recruiters look for). Writing production code is also what separates an FDE from a solutions architect, who delivers architecture documents and often stops at a proof of concept (FDE vs solutions architect).

How is an FDE different from a solutions engineer?

Solutions engineers and solutions architects mostly work before the sale as technical advisers and often stop at a demo or proof of concept. An FDE comes in after the sale, works deep in rollout and operations, and owns the production code at the customer. Moving from solutions engineer to FDE means moving from demo code to production code and taking responsibility for how the deployment turns out (from solutions engineer to FDE).

What companies hire Forward Deployed Engineers?

Right now the most open FDE roles are at Databricks (125), Palantir (109), OpenAI (30), Scale AI (16), Cohere (13), Cursor (11), ElevenLabs (11), Cresta (10), out of 42 companies in the FDE Hiring Tracker, which is updated from official careers pages.

How do I become a Forward Deployed Engineer?

Show that you have shipped working systems in messy, real environments: FDE job posts ask what you have shipped, not for AI certificates (what FDE job posts ask for). Recruiters screen on coding and rank on customer communication; the FDE Times roadmap covers the eight stages from foundations to career. New-grad FDE roles exist but the door is narrow; for most engineers in Vietnam, building 12–18 months of deployment experience before switching is the more realistic path (new-grad FDE roles).

Is Forward Deployed Engineer a remote job?

Mostly not. Only 24% of the 432 open roles FDE Times tracks are open to remote work. The job is built around working alongside customers, typically 25–50% of time on site, and some air-gapped systems cannot be reached remotely (why FDEs travel). Even a listing labelled "Remote" can require on-site work and travel (reading the "Remote" label).

How much does a Forward Deployed Engineer make?

In 179 US FDE job posts that state a range, the median base salary is $216k, and the typical posted range is $182k–$250k. That is base pay only; equity and bonus are not included (FDE salary data).

What does FDE stand for, and where did the role come from?

FDE stands for Forward Deployed Engineer. The model is most closely associated with Palantir, which splits deployment between two roles: Echo, an analyst who knows the business domain, and Delta, an engineer who builds prototypes fast (Delta and Echo). Companies now use several names for similar work (six companies, six titles).
