FDE pay in Singapore: the demand is proven, the salary tables are mostly guesswork
Only one of the Singapore FDE job ads checked shows a salary. A staffing firm's S$7,000–25,000 range is actually borrowed from a different job.
In brief
- Demand for FDEs in Singapore is documented: OpenAI, Singtel and Field AI have all advertised roles, and The Straits Times reported a sharp rise in demand.
- Second Talent's S$7,000–25,000 a month range is borrowed from the firm's own machine learning engineer bands, not measured from FDE pay.
- The only figure taken from a real job ad is S$7K for a mid-level role at Hiverlab, exactly the floor of that firm's junior band.
Second Talent, a staffing firm, publishes a rate page that puts Forward Deployed Engineer pay in Singapore at S$7,000 to S$25,000 a month. The same page also says FDE is not a title that Singapore employers hire for in large numbers.
The two statements pull against each other. If few employers are hiring, where do the ranges come from? The answer is on the page too: the ranges are borrowed from the firm’s machine learning engineer bands in Singapore. This is an analogy, not a measurement.
Whether you are weighing an offer in Singapore or simply want to know the going rate in the region, that contradiction goes straight to your pay. The first number you find tends to become the anchor for the whole negotiation.
Set the available job ads, press reports and rate pages side by side and a pattern emerges: demand for FDEs in Singapore is well evidenced, while prices have barely been published. If you want numbers you can use, you will have to collect them yourself.
Demand leaves a clear trail
On 13 June 2026 The Straits Times reported that FDEs are in demand in Singapore. A syndicated summary of the article says recruitment consultancies have seen demand for the role rise sharply over the past two to three years. The summary gives no salary figures.
Job ads show more clearly who is hiring. OpenAI advertised an FDE role requiring at least four years of experience and up to 50% travel. The role was based in Singapore, meaning a leading AI lab has hired FDEs locally.
Local companies have joined in as well. Singtel, Singapore’s telecoms company, posted an FDE ad dated 6 May 2026.
Field AI’s ad adds something else. Its Singapore FDE role is on-site within the Autonomy team and owns end-to-end deployment of autonomous systems in customer environments. In this region, FDE work is not only LLM software; it also includes robots and hardware in the field.
Prices have barely been published
None of the three ads, from OpenAI, Field AI and Singtel, gives a salary range. Field AI’s page states plainly that pay is not listed. Singtel’s role has been filled. OpenAI’s ad no longer accepts applications, and its careers page says only that it was posted more than six months ago.
As a result, most Singapore FDE salary figures in circulation come from three kinds of source: staffing firms, job aggregators, or a single ad. All three are useful if you know what each one can prove.
| Source | Type of evidence | Salary figure? | What it is good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Second Talent | Commercial estimate, borrowed from ML engineer bands | Yes, S$7,000–25,000/month, base salary only | A rough reference point, not the FDE market rate |
| Hiverlab (via Semesteria) | One real job ad, mid-level, on-site | Yes, S$7K/month according to the aggregator | One data point, not enough to make a trend |
| OpenAI, Field AI, Singtel | Real job ads | No | Who is hiring and what they ask for |
| The Straits Times | Press, via a syndicated summary | None in the summary | Demand rising over two to three years |
What does the only real figure say?
The aggregator Semesteria lists an FDE role at Hiverlab in Singapore: on-site, mid-level, full-time, paying S$7K a month. The page gives no exact posting date, and this is a single ad.
Compare S$7K with Second Talent’s table: its junior band is S$7,000–9,500 and its mid-level band S$9,500–13,500.
A role explicitly labelled mid-level sits exactly at the floor of the junior band, S$2,500 a month below the floor of the mid-level band, or about 26%.
That gap is large enough to change whether you accept or turn down an offer.
One ad is not enough to discredit a whole range. Hiverlab may be an outlier. Or machine learning engineer pay may not reflect what smaller local companies actually pay FDEs.
There is not yet the data to say which is true. Until there is, the ranges in circulation should be treated as untested hypotheses.
Check a salary table as you would check a client’s data
At a client site, a good FDE does not trust the first dashboard they are shown. They ask where the data came from, how many rows there are, and what date it was cut. A salary table deserves the same three questions.
Apply them to Second Talent’s table. The figures are borrowed from another job, not measured directly.
The ranges cover base salary only, with no equity, so they tell you nothing about that part of pay at companies that compensate in shares. The table is usable as a rough reference, but it should not be your anchor.
Apply them to Hiverlab’s ad and the result is the reverse. The figure is measured directly, but it is a single data point with no clear date. It gives you a real benchmark to compare against, but says nothing about the market as a whole.
With no price, value the role on what the job description states
Ads without salaries still carry sourced details that bear directly on how much you should ask for. Travelling up to 50% of the time, as in OpenAI’s ad, is a very different life from working in an office.
Working on-site with robots, as at Field AI, demands a different skill set from integrating APIs for a language model.
So when you read a job description, look for four things: the share of travel, on-site or remote, minimum years of experience, and the deployment domain. These four details let you compare two roles that share the FDE title but are in practice different jobs, even when neither lists a salary.
For your CV, Field AI’s ad is the clearest pointer: the role requires leading end-to-end deployment of autonomous systems in customer environments. If you are aiming for roles like that, describe your experience in the same terms: what you deployed, where, under what constraints, and with what result.
If you have worked with equipment or physical systems, say so explicitly, because Field AI’s ad shows the market needs people like that too.
Watch the pace as well. Singtel’s role has been filled and OpenAI’s has closed. In a market where recruiters report sharply rising demand but public ads are scarce, setting job alerts and applying early matters more than waiting for a perfect salary table.
In Singapore right now, what is scarce is not only good FDEs but a salary figure with a clear source. If you log a few dozen ads yourself and ask for a few real salary ranges, you will have better data than most of the salary tables now available.
