# FDE pay in the UAE: ask about basic salary before the total

> The same offer of AED 50,000 a month can qualify for a Golden Visa or fall short of it. After five years it can also leave AED 35,000 of end-of-service gratuity on the table. It all depends on how the employer splits that total between basic salary and allowances.

A Wave Group posting for a Senior Forward Deployed Engineer, based in the UAE with relocation support, states a clear pay range: AED 50,000-90,000 a month. Of the three UAE FDE postings compared below, it is the only one that gives a figure.

A figure only gets you halfway, though. In the UAE the total on an offer is split into basic salary and allowances, and the two are treated differently. The skilled-worker Golden Visa and end-of-service gratuity, the two things that matter most if you plan to stay long term, are both assessed on basic salary.

If you are an engineer weighing an FDE role in the Gulf, the question is not just "how much" but "how is it split". Three real postings and one simple calculation show what that split is worth.

## What the postings say, and what they leave out

Read the three postings closely and each promises something different. Wave Group's gives a pay range and says the relocation package includes a visa. It does not separate basic salary from allowances and says nothing about benefits.

SPsoft's posting for a Forward Deployed AI Engineer, on-site in Abu Dhabi, gives no salary but lists a fair amount of support.

According to SPsoft, the expected support includes a UAE work visa, employee health insurance, an initial flight to the UAE, agency fees and help finding an apartment. All of it is subject to the final written offer. The role is a one-year contract with the possibility of renewal.

The third, an FDE role in Dubai posted through Jobgether in June 2026 and now closed, says only that pay is competitive, with equity opportunities.

| Posting | Pay | Visa | Relocation support | What to ask |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wave Group, Senior FDE, UAE | AED 50,000-90,000/month | Yes, part of the relocation package | Yes, described as "full" | How much of that range is basic salary |
| SPsoft, Forward Deployed AI Engineer, Abu Dhabi | Not stated | Expected | Flight, agency fees, apartment search | Everything depends on the final offer; one-year contract |
| Dubai FDE role via Jobgether | "Competitive", with equity | Ask | Ask | Almost everything |

Put the three in one table and the problem is plain: none gives you enough to compare. The clearest on money says nothing about the split. The clearest on support gives no numbers at all. So the most important part of the negotiation happens after you have passed the interviews.

## Why basic salary decides the Golden Visa

The official Abu Dhabi Golden Visa page for skilled workers (ADDED) states only a minimum salary of AED 30,000 a month, proved with a salary certificate from the employer and six months of bank statements. It does not say whether that figure means basic or total salary.

The detail that settles it is in a note on the UAE Golden Visa from the immigration law firm Fragomen: since May 2024, applicants in this category must have a monthly basic salary of AED 30,000, excluding any allowances. Whether the job is in Abu Dhabi or Dubai, the safe assumption is that AED 30,000 is a basic-salary threshold.

An offer of AED 50,000 sounds well above the bar, but if basic salary is only 25,000 you still do not qualify. In the UAE the salary split is not a bookkeeping detail: it decides whether you can get a Golden Visa.

**Key point:** In the UAE, the number most worth negotiating in an offer is usually basic salary, not the total.

## Two identical offers, two different gratuities

According to Gulf News, end-of-service gratuity in the UAE is based on final basic salary: 21 days of basic salary for each year of service in the first five years, then 30 days a year after that. The National confirms the same method. Allowances therefore add nothing to the gratuity.

Take two offers, both AED 50,000 a month, the bottom of Wave Group's range. Offer A splits it into 35,000 basic and 15,000 allowances. Offer B splits it into 25,000 basic and 25,000 allowances. The money landing in your account each month is the same.

After five years you have accrued 105 days of basic salary. Assume a day's pay is monthly basic salary divided by 30 (check the actual conversion with the employer).

Offer A then pays about AED 122,500 and offer B about AED 87,500. The gap is AED 35,000, exactly one month of offer A's basic salary, even though you would never notice a difference month to month.

Offer B loses on one more count: its basic salary of 25,000 is below the Golden Visa threshold. On the same total income, one offer gives you both eligibility for a long-term visa and a larger gratuity; the other gives you neither. The figures are hypothetical, but the calculation follows the rules set out above.

Contract length changes the sums too. On a one-year contract like SPsoft's, the method above earns you at most 21 days of basic salary; the 30-days-a-year rate only starts after five years. If you take a role like that, ask at the outset what basic salary will be on renewal.

## No income tax is not the end of the tax story

The National quotes an adviser saying that workers in the UAE will continue to pay no tax on income. So the figure on an offer is closer to your take-home pay than an equivalent salary in a country that taxes income.

But Wise points out that living in the UAE does not free you from tax obligations everywhere: what usually decides it is tax residency, not citizenship, and double taxation treaties exist.

Gulf News gives the example of British nationals: if you remain UK tax-resident, you may owe tax on your worldwide income. Talk to a tax adviser in your home country before signing, and only then set the UAE offer against one at home.

## Three common mistakes when accepting an offer

The first is looking only at the total and accepting an allowance-heavy split. With offer B above, your monthly pay is unchanged but you lose Golden Visa eligibility and part of your gratuity. If the company wants to hold the total, propose moving part of the allowances into basic salary.

The second is trusting the word "expected". SPsoft's posting says plainly that the visa, insurance, flight and housing help are all subject to the final written offer. Anything not in that document should not count towards the value of the package.

The third is accepting a posting that says only "competitive salary, with equity" without asking more. With a posting like that you need to ask everything from the start: basic salary, allowances, who handles the visa, and what the equity actually is.

## Scarcity lets you ask for a bigger basic salary

UMATR, a UAE recruitment firm, says the pool of engineers with genuine Forward Deployed experience there is still small. The firm says it placed a candidate with just 1.5 years of experience, arguing that in a fast-growing AI market the ability to execute often counts for more than years served.

That is your leverage in negotiating the split. When a company struggles to find people who have really done FDE work, asking to move part of the allowances into basic salary, to clear the AED 30,000 threshold and raise your gratuity, is a reasonable request: the monthly total stays the same.

But the leverage exists only if you can show work you have done on a customer's site, not a title on your CV. Bring a concrete example to the negotiation: where you sat, which system you took to production, and what happened.

Once you have an offer, treat the negotiation like a customer discovery session with the company hiring you. Ask what basic salary is and which items make up the allowances. Ask for the visa, insurance and relocation support to be written into the offer.

A good FDE does not accept a customer's requirements without asking where the real data lives. An offer from Abu Dhabi or Dubai is the same: the total is the number on the slide, and basic salary is the real data.

**Try this week:**

- Find three FDE postings in Dubai or Abu Dhabi and note for each one: does it state pay, does it mention a visa, does it offer relocation support, and with what conditions
- Take a hypothetical total salary, try two different splits between basic salary and allowances, and work out the gratuity after five years at 21 days of basic salary per year
- Write two or three sentences about a time you took a system to production on a customer's site, ready to use as your case when asking for a larger basic salary in the offer
