# Rogo hires for three ‘forward deployed’ roles: two finance specialists and one infrastructure engineer

> At this AI start-up for investment banks, people from banks and investment funds handle the client-facing work, while engineers own the full infrastructure lifecycle of each deployment.

Rogo, which describes itself as an AI platform for investment banking and finance, attaches the phrase “Forward Deployed” to three job titles: Banker, Investor and Engineer. The first two recruit people from banks and investment funds. Only the third asks about Kubernetes.

This is not naming for its own sake. Rogo says its product already runs at many of the world's leading investment banks, asset managers and private equity funds, and the company sends both forward-deployed bankers and engineers to work alongside customers. Here, “forward deployed” describes how the team is organised, not a skill set.

For an engineer aiming at an FDE career, this detail deserves a close look. Read only the letters FDE in the title and skip the responsibilities, and you may pour your effort into demos and product storytelling for a role that actually needs an infrastructure engineer.

## The client-facing work already belongs to finance people

Rogo describes the Forward Deployed Banker as someone who sits between three functions: sales, product and engineering. The job posting asks for 2+ years of experience at a top investment bank; the recruiting event page is a little looser, accepting at least two years in investment banking and/or investing.

People in this role partner directly with Sales, Product and Engineering, both to drive go-to-market activity and to keep improving the product. The posting says the role influences product direction, but it never uses the word “roadmap”.

The Forward Deployed Investor is a step up in industry seniority: 3–5+ years in a front-office role at a top investment bank, private equity fund or hedge fund. This role also works directly with Sales, Product and Engineering.

The Investor's contribution to the product is described more concretely: turning customer feedback, financial workflows and market trends into specific, immediately usable insights that make the product better.

In other words, Rogo's domain specialists are expected to inform product direction, while the postings do not hand them decisions on the roadmap.

## So what does the Forward Deployed Engineer do?

A completely different job. The Forward Deployed Engineer posting gives the engineer end-to-end ownership of the infrastructure lifecycle for Rogo deployments at customers. The two technical skills named explicitly are container orchestration with Kubernetes and Infrastructure as Code tooling.

Set this role beside the common descriptions of an FDE and the difference is plain. The Pragmatic Engineer defines an FDE as a software engineer who rotates between sitting with customer teams and working in the core product engineering team. OpenAI's job posting stresses embedding with customers, understanding their domain and co-developing solutions.

Ramp goes further still: FDEs there lead the engineering roadmap of the core product, making important calls on prioritisation and scope. Put these descriptions in one table and it becomes clear that the same phrase can cover very different scopes of work:

| Source | What the FDE does | Relationship to the product |
|---|---|---|
| The Pragmatic Engineer | Rotates between customer teams and the core product team | Works directly on the core product in phases |
| OpenAI | Embeds with customers, understands the domain, co-builds solutions | Develops solutions together with the customer |
| Ramp | Leads the core product's engineering roadmap | Decides prioritisation and scope |
| Rogo (Engineer) | Owns the full infrastructure lifecycle of customer deployments | Focused on infrastructure; Kubernetes, IaC |
| Rogo (Banker, Investor) | Sits between sales, product and engineering; drives go-to-market | Informs product direction, no mention of roadmap |

## Why split it across three people?

One plausible explanation, inferred from the job requirements themselves: when the customers are banks and investment funds, the person in the meeting room needs a background those customers trust. Both finance roles require experience at a “top” bank or fund, something that rarely appears on a software engineer's CV.

So Rogo does not try to turn engineers into bankers. It hires industry people directly for that work, and gives the infrastructure to engineers.

Picture a bank rolling out Rogo. The Investor answers domain questions that an outsider would struggle to answer convincingly; the Banker works with Sales and Product to fit the product to how that bank does deals. The Engineer takes on the deployment and is accountable for making it run in the customer's environment.

Each person brings a different kind of signal back to the company. The finance people bring back the question “what should the product do?”; the engineer brings back “how does the product run in the customer's environment?”

**Key point:** The words forward deployed tell you where you sit, not what you do.

## Which role should an engineer target, and how to prepare?

The honest answer is the Engineer role. The Banker requires investment banking experience at a top bank; the Investor requires front-office experience at a bank, PE firm or hedge fund. A software engineer's CV will struggle to get past those filters, however good your demos are.

The first skills to invest in are Kubernetes and IaC, because they are the only two named in the posting. The posting specifies hands-on experience, so aim to have used them yourself, not merely read the documentation.

In your current job, volunteer to install the product for a large customer, write the IaC for their environment and handle upgrades yourself.

The second skill is easier to underrate: understanding the customer's business, exactly what OpenAI puts in its FDE description. On a team like Rogo's you work beside people from banking, so an engineer who knows enough financial vocabulary to talk with them will relay feedback to the core team faster and more accurately.

Remember, too, that the FDE role at Rogo is narrower than at Ramp. If what you want is to decide what the product does, look for JDs that use words like “roadmap” or “prioritization”; if you love running systems in other people's environments, JDs like Rogo's are the right place.

When writing a CV for an infrastructure-leaning role, use the posting's word “own” in the same spirit: instead of “supported customer deployments”, state which infrastructure you were responsible for, for how many customers, with which tools.

At Rogo, the industry people own the meeting room, and the engineers own the part of the product that actually runs inside the customer. To join a team like that, let your CV tell the second story.

**Try this week:**

- Open any three FDE job descriptions, underline the main verbs in the responsibilities section (demo, own, build, drive), then place each role in one of three groups: sales, domain specialist, infrastructure.
- Rebuild a deployment you have done using IaC (Terraform or equivalent) on a Kubernetes cluster, then write a one-page description of its lifecycle, from installation through upgrades to teardown.
- Rewrite one CV line using this template: which infrastructure you were responsible for, for how many customers, with which tools, and what feedback you relayed to the core team.
