# Mastercard hires an FDE to serve its own engineering teams

> The job ad says "Principal Software Engineer", but its first sentence shows forward deployed engineering moving inside financial groups.

The title on Mastercard's job ad is "Principal Software Engineer". But the very first sentence of the description names the role for what it is: a Principal Forward Deployed Engineer who writes code directly to accelerate delivery across Mastercard Services.

The more telling detail is who this person serves. According to the ad, they are embedded directly in the product and engineering teams of the Services division to write production-grade code. This FDE's customers are not the banks or partners that buy Mastercard's products. The customers are colleagues inside the group.

For anyone trying to break into the field, that is a signal worth noting. FDE is no longer a title reserved for AI start-ups. It has become a way of working that a payments group is applying to itself, which means you can find, and build, FDE skills at companies that do not call themselves AI companies.

## What has Mastercard kept from the original?

Mastercard is explicit about its inspiration: the role is modelled on the forward deployed engineering approach that leading technology companies are building into their teams. To see how closely it follows the original, compare it with two other FDE ads.

Palantir's ad opens by declaring that being an FDE means going all in on the end result. Its FDEs build applications, LLM workflows and production solutions shaped to each customer's reality, and they travel a lot.

OpenAI has a dedicated FDE ad for financial services, aimed at banks and asset managers. The hire owns the technical side across several deployment phases, from the first prototype to stable production.

| Aspect | Palantir | OpenAI (financial services) | Mastercard |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who the customer is | A specific outside customer | Banks, asset managers | Product and engineering teams in Mastercard Services |
| Title on the ad | Forward Deployed Software Engineer | Forward Deployed Engineer, Financial Services | Principal Software Engineer |
| AI work | Applications and LLM workflows tailored to each customer | From first prototype to stable production | Assistants, agents and multi-agent workflows in production |
| What is promised | The customer's outcome | Full delivery across several deployment phases | Faster delivery across all of Services |

Read the table row by row and only two rows truly separate Mastercard from the other two ads: the title and who is being served. On the other two rows the three ads almost coincide: AI has to run for real, and the work is judged by what ships, not by demos.

## Are internal customers easier to serve?

At first glance, serving colleagues sounds gentler than serving paying customers. The ad says nothing about difficulty, so what follows is a hypothetical scenario, not Mastercard's description.

Picture a team in Services that already has a demo of an AI assistant but has never got it into production, because no one on the team has run a real agent before. You are sent over, sit with them and find the blockage, perhaps in quality evaluation, perhaps in the security review process. Then you ship with them.

The hardest part of that scenario comes when you leave. You do not own the product, and the team has to be able to run it on its own once you have moved to another team.

Monterail, a consultancy, warns that if deployments accumulate nothing, each one leaves behind only a one-off build and the effort never compounds.

So measure a deployment by what the team can still use after you leave, not only by the features shipped. That might be an eval suite, a runbook for operating the agent, or a code pattern the next team can reuse.

**Key point:** FDE is a way of working, not a privilege of AI start-ups.

## Why would a payments group need someone like this?

The AI work in the ad hints at the answer. Mastercard needs someone to design and deploy production-grade AI systems such as assistants, agents and multi-agent workflows. Placing that requirement in a role that works across many teams suggests the company wants to bring this capability to each team rather than leave every team to figure it out alone.

Mastercard is not alone. TechCrunch reports that businesses from insurance and fintech to healthcare and gaming are all hunting for these specialists.

The publication also cites a forecast from recruiting firm Christian & Timbers that demand for FDEs will grow 2,100% by the end of the year. That figure comes from a firm in the recruiting business, so it is best read as an indicator of direction.

Harrington Starr, a recruiter specialising in finance, argues that the real story is financial institutions hiring a different kind of engineer, one who works directly with customers in live environments. The reason it gives is that this shortens the feedback loop between customers, engineering and product.

That reasoning also explains the internal model. When the "customers" are product teams in the same group, embedding an FDE with them shortens the feedback loop without any contract at all.

Monterail also notes that hiring FDEs directly is not easy, but companies with strong enough foundations can take on a team of FDEs and grow the capability in-house from there.

## Read job ads by duties, not by title

If Mastercard posts an FDE role as "Principal Software Engineer", other large companies may do the same. Filter only for "Forward Deployed" on AI companies' careers pages and you will miss roles like this.

Read the description and look for the signals: embedded with teams, writing production code, accelerating delivery, taking AI from prototype to production. An ad with three of these four signals deserves a close read, whatever the title.

## Principal level is a destination, not an entry point

One limit needs stating plainly: Mastercard asks for deep hands-on experience at Principal or Senior Principal level. If you have 2 to 8 years of experience, this is not an ad to apply to. Use it instead as a description of the destination you are heading towards.

The useful part is that every skill the ad asks for can be practised early. Find out whether your company has a platform team that regularly helps other teams and ask to join one engagement. Or take on a concrete task: help another team move an AI feature from demo to production.

Then rewrite your CV the same way. Do not write "developed feature X". Tell the project as a deployment: which team was stuck and where, what you did, what you shipped, and what that team could still run on its own after you left. For interviews, have a story ready about a time you stepped in to help a team that was not yours.

When a payments group brings the model of leading technology companies to bear on its own problems, FDE work is no longer tied to one kind of company. Next time you see a "Principal Software Engineer" ad at a bank or an insurer, read the duties carefully.

**Try this week:**

- Search the careers pages of a few banks, insurers or fintechs with phrases such as 'accelerate delivery', 'embed with teams' and 'production AI' instead of 'forward deployed', and note the ads whose descriptions look like FDE work.
- Put the Mastercard, Palantir and OpenAI ads side by side, mark which requirements you can already back with a real project and which are still gaps, then pick one gap to fill this quarter.
