# FDE pay in London: from £65,000 at Adverity to £255,000 at Anthropic, across three job ads

> Three roles share one title, yet their base salaries differ by almost four times. In these three ads, the gap seems to track the work done for clients more than the job title.

Three job ads in London carry the same title, Forward Deployed Engineer, yet their base salaries sit far apart. Anthropic's lists £225,000–£255,000 a year. Adverity's ad description gives £65,000–£90,000 plus a performance bonus, although the header on the aggregator page shows a different range.

At a glance it is tempting to conclude that AI labs simply pay more than everyone else. Read each ad closely, though, and every figure comes with its own type of work and its own set of conditions: what you must build, how long you spend at the client, how many days you are in the office, and an equity stake that may never turn into cash.

If you work as an FDE or want to become one, this way of reading matters more than the numbers themselves. It lets you compare two offers fairly, and shows what to practise if you are aiming for the top pay bracket.

## Where does the market sit?

First, a benchmark. Indeed UK puts the average FDE salary in London at £114,000 a year, with a typical range of £70,759 to £183,665.

On its own, that range is so wide as to be almost meaningless. The top is about 2.6 times the bottom, which suggests the label "FDE in London" is lumping together very different jobs.

Two other sources give different figures, largely because they measure different things. Levels.fyi reports a median of £143,990, but that is total compensation: base salary, annualised equity and bonus. FDE Academy offers a base salary range of £65,000–£110,000 without saying where the data comes from.

| Source | What it measures | Figure | How to use it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Indeed UK | Base salary for FDEs in London | Avg £114,000, from £70,759 to £183,665 | Main benchmark for base salaries in job ads |
| Levels.fyi | Total compensation: salary, equity, bonus; 32 reports, geographic scope unclear | Median £143,990 | Reference for the UK only; do not compare directly with base salary |
| FDE Academy | Base salary in London | £65,000–£110,000 | Low reliability because no source is given |

The table explains a very common mistake: setting Levels.fyi's £143,990 against an ad that lists only base salary and concluding you are underpaid. The two figures do not measure the same thing.

Place the three ads within Indeed's range and each one's position becomes clear. On the figure in its description, Adverity's lower end is below the floor.

Arva AI's upper end, £110,000, is still below the average. Anthropic's lower end, by contrast, is £41,335 above the ceiling, and £81,010 above Levels.fyi's median total compensation even though it is base salary alone.

The AI lab's pay is therefore not representative of the market. It sits well above the range most London FDEs actually earn.

## Does pay follow how much "building" the job involves?

The ads do not say why each company pays what it does. But set the three job descriptions side by side and a pattern is hard to ignore: the higher the pay, the more the work leans towards building systems inside the client's environment.

At Adverity, the FDE acts as a domain expert who accompanies clients through onboarding of the company's latest AI product, helping them see value quickly. That is closer to solutions engineering or customer success than to building systems.

At Arva AI, the FDE owns the client's deployment from first engagement, through implementation and launch, to the iterations after go-live. They must also turn client problems into product requirements, which means feeding back into the roadmap.

At Anthropic, the FDE works directly inside the client's systems to build production applications with Claude models.

Three ads are not enough to prove a rule. But they offer a useful way to read a listing: before looking at the pay, count the verbs. "Guide", "advise" and "onboard" signal one kind of job; "build", "deploy" and "own" signal another, and appear to be paid very differently.

## What does £225,000 demand beyond skill?

The rest of the package is about how you live. Anthropic's ad says the role requires frequent visits to clients, 25–50% of the time, to build products alongside them, plus a requirement to be in the office.

A year has 52 weeks, so that works out at roughly 13 to 26 weeks living out of a suitcase. That cost is paid in time with family, and it belongs on the scales from the moment you compare two offers.

**Key point:** Two FDE offers can only be compared when you weigh the whole package, not just the salary figure.

Arva AI demands presence of a different kind: in person in central London, 4–5 days a week in the office. In other words, almost the entire working week at a desk in the office.

## Startups compensate with equity, but by how much nobody yet knows

Arva AI's base salary is below Indeed's average, but it comes with 0.10%–0.30% equity. This is the familiar startup trade-off: less cash today for a stake that may be large later.

The thing to watch is the equity range itself. 0.30% is three times 0.10%, so picture two people both on £95,000: the one who negotiated 0.30% holds three times the stake of the other, despite identical payslips.

Arva also states plainly that it is willing to pay above the range for exceptional candidates. So £110,000 is not quite a ceiling. If you can bring evidence of having owned a deployment end to end, that is leverage to negotiate both salary and equity.

## Don't trust the first number you see

Adverity illustrates a very ordinary trap. On the job aggregator, the top of the listing shows £25,000–£35,000, while the body of the ad says £65,000–£90,000 plus bonus. The two cannot both be right, and from the aggregator page alone there is no way to tell which reflects the real offer.

The lesson is simple: read both the header and the body of the ad, and when they conflict, check the company's own careers page or ask the recruiter directly in the first round.

For roles with a bonus, ask what targets it is based on, because an FDE judged on the number of clients successfully onboarded will work very differently from one judged on revenue.

## The road to the top bracket runs through the client's systems

If the pattern in these three ads holds, the thing worth accumulating earliest is not the FDE title but experience building and running software in someone else's environment. You can start in your current job.

Volunteer for client integration projects, take on debugging a deployment incident, or follow a feature from the moment a client raises a problem until after go-live. Each time, your CV gains another concrete line to tell.

On your CV, make those lines easy for an FDE recruiter to read. Instead of "collaborated with stakeholders", write which client you worked for, what their system looked like, what you built and shipped to production, and what you still fixed after launch.

In London, at least in these three ads, the gap between £65,000 and £255,000 does not lie in the title. It lies in whether you stand beside the client to guide them, or sit inside the client's systems to build.

**Try this week:**

- Pick three FDE ads that interest you and build a five-column table: base salary, equity or bonus, travel share, office days, main type of work. If the header and body of an ad give different figures, check the company's own careers page.
- Underline the verbs in each job description: 'advise', 'guide', 'onboard' or 'build', 'deploy', 'own'. It is the quickest way to know which kind of FDE role you are applying for.
- Rewrite three bullet points on your CV using this structure: who the client was, what their system looked like, what you built and shipped to production, and what you did after go-live.
